Hello!

Thank you for your interest in the Spring Research Expo at the University of Idaho. This year our event will occur on April 25th, in the UI Commons Building. The event’s sponsors are the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA), the College of Graduate Studies (COGS), the University Research Office (URO) and the Provost’s Office.

[In conjunction with our event, the College of Engineering is hosting their annual Engineering Design Expo on the same day in the Student Union Building (SUB). For more information about their event please click here.]

Display of Student Art and Awards

Interested students should contact Craig Watt (craig.watt@vandals.uidaho.edu) directly regarding art display. Two prizes will be given for artwork, a people's choice award and an award by faculty. Both awards will be $150 each. There are no "research stipulations" regarding these awards. Requirements are: students are in charge of transport/delivery/set-up of any artwork; dance, theatrical or musical pieces cannot be accommodated in the art space; and to win an award the student must be currently enrolled. Display tables and easels will be available for your work. At this time students are limited to one piece. It is possible this will be reconsidered dependent upon availability of physical space.

Students who have artistic, musical, or performance art that is considered research in nature should follow the instructions as directed in the section immediately above titled "How to Sign-up".

The Day's Program and Awards

Graduate/Law/Professional students will be presenting to faculty judges and audience members (typically friends of the presenter) from 8:00AM until 4:00PM in the Commons on April 25th. There is space for 48 presentations (see the next section for more details). We have three rooms reserved for presentations and will have three presentations occurring at the same time through out the day at 30 minute intervals.

Undergraduate students' research posters will be on display in the Commons all day on April 25th and will be judged by faculty prior to or after they have judged graduate student presentations.

Each participant shall receive a certificate of participation. Monetary awards will additionally be given to those students whose research is praised by the faculty judges. The top graduate-level prize is $500.00. Additionally, awards will be given to the UI Colleges with the highest faculty judge or graduate student participation rates and two awards of $100.00 each will be given for non-research student artwork.

At 5:00PM appetizers and beverages will available for the public as they view the undergraduate research posters and student artwork in the Whitewater/Clearwater room on the 1st floor of the Commons. From 6 - 7:00PM the award ceremony will begin in the Summit Room on the 4th floor with additional appetizers and beverages. During the ceremony there will be obligatory speeches, presentation of certificates and awards, and a short entertainment piece. Additionally the winners of the GPSA elections will be announced. The award ceremony is open to the University Community, however we are limited to a maximum of 200 persons.

Participation in the Student Research Expo at UI

There are five opportunities for participation in the Spring Research Expo at the Commons Building: as an undergraduate, as a graduate/law/professional student, as a faculty judge, as a non-research artist, and as a volunteer.

 Volunteers are needed to:

  • Assist with poster and artwork set-up the evening of the 24th or the morning of the 25th
  • Assist with poster and artwork break-down the evening of the 25th or the morning of the 26th
  • Check in presenters and faculty judges on the 25th
  • Time presentations and gather faculty judge's scorecards on the 25th
  • Tabulate scores and print certificates on the 25th
  • Other duties as assigned

Volunteers are rewarded! If you volunteer for a minimum of two hours you will get a box lunch and, if you are one of the participants in the Expo, you will also get one (1) bonus point added to your score (maximum score of 25, not including any a bonus)! Volunteers are accepted on a first-come/first-serve basis. Student research expo participants can register to be a volunteer at the same time they register online. If you wish to volunteer, but do not wish to display or present any research findings, please contact Jon Meier at jmeier@vandals.uidaho.edu.

Faculty Judges are needed to score the research posters and presentations. Final scores and awards are based on the average of the judges’ scores. Faculty judges receive a box lunch and much appreciation! The faculty judges need to be available for a minimum of a two (2) hour block of time (must be available to judge four consecutive graduate-level presentations).

Undergraduate students display their research posters. Nominations are via academic departments. Posters are displayed all day on April 25th. Judging will occur during the course of the day. The maximum number of undergraduate posters is set at 24 currently; with a maximum of one poster per academic department. Those student participants who volunteer for two or more hours will have one point added to their score (see volunteer information above). Each student is required to recruit one faculty judge from their college.

Graduate/Law/Professional students make a brief presentation (12 – 18 minutes) of their research. A maximum of 48 presentations is allowed. Departments may nominate up to three students. If more than 48 requests are made, the GPSA Expo Committee, at its discretion, will determine how to reduce the participant pool. Most presentations are anticipated to be oral and include a visual component; however, due to the nature of research (e.g. art, music, creative writing, etc…) this may vary. Judging will occur from 8:00AM until 4:00PM. Those student participants who volunteer for two or more hours will have one point added to their score (see volunteer information above). The expertise of the faculty judges at any one presentation is fairly random, therefore it is recommended that presenters make their presentations somewhat general in nature. Each student is required to recruit one faculty judge from their college.

Non-research artwork. Please see the section below titled "Display of Student Art & Awards."

How to sign up (steps 1, 2, and 3 for students; steps 1 and 2 for faculty)

Step 1)     Each department (or college for Law, WWAMI, or non-declared students) that has student participants needs to complete a nomination form (click here). This form contains information regarding its student participants and the faculty judges the students recruit. It will likely make sense for one person within each department to maintain this form. Address forms to Craig Watt, GPSA President. Mail nomination forms to campus zip 1139 or hand-deliver them to the CSS department in the basement of the College of Natural Resources Building. Nomination forms must be received by Friday, April 11th at 5:00PM.
Failure to complete this task may prevent students from being eligible for the event.

Step 2)  Click here to go to our online registration website (students and faculty).
Reminders to register online will be forthcoming via email, the Argonaut, campus flyers, etc…, and will include a link to this webpage. Registration is available for students until Saturday, April 5th at 11:55PM and for faculty judges until Friday, April 11th at 5:00PM.

Step 3)  Students only:  Each student participant must email a research abstract by Sunday April 6th, to:  craig.watt@vandals.uidaho.edu. Note: maximum length of abstracts is 150 words. If your abstract exceeds this length one (1) point will be deducted from your score (maximum score of 25 not including bonus or penalty). Dependent on resources, abstracts may be edited down to approximately 50 words at a later date for inclusion in the UI Spring Research Expo Guide that will be available the day of the event.

Disclaimer: the GPSA reserves the right to fairly alter content of this website and any rules, regulations or processes as needed in advance of the Student Research Expo. We will attempt to modify this webpage within 24 hours of any decision. We are an all-volunteer organization conducting a University-wide event. Any slack you can cut us is greatly appreciated.
