 2008 General Election

As candidates for all positions were write-in, confirmation/consent by write-in candidates is required. Winners of the election have not yet been confirmed but we hope to have these results shortly.

Craig Watt was the write-in winner for President but he has declined this position, though he has stated that he is interested in acting in an advisory role for the next round of GPSA representatives. Karen Neorr and Monica Hansen each received two (2) votes, consent regarding this position from them has not yet been determined. If both do NOT accept then a tie-breaker system will be utilized amongst the remaining candidates.

Parul (complete name), was the write-in winner for Vice President but she has not decided if she will accept this position at this time. Other write-in candidates will be contacted in order of votes received. It is possible a tie-breaker will need to be utilized..

The known winner for one Senator-at-large position is Monica Hansen, a graduate student in the College of Education at the Coeur d'Alene campus.
Regarding the seven (7) other Senator-at-large positions:
Kenichi Shimizu received two votes and we are in the process of contacting him regarding this position;
over ten (10) other write-in candidates received one vote for the Senator-at-large positions (see link below); therefore a tie-breaker system will be utilized.

The newly elected representatives begin office on Tuesday, May 13, 2008. The last day in office for all current representatives is May 12, 2008.

GPSA has an annual budget of approximately $80,000. Major projects in the past have been administration of a graduate student travel awards program with an annual budget of approximately $40,000 and coordination of the Student Research Expo. Constituents of GPSA are all enrolled graduate students. GPSA is funded by fees from full-time Moscow campus graduate students.

This year we find ourselves with no candidates for President or Vice President. Therefore write-in candidates will be those elected for these positions. Craig Watt, the current GPSA President, was previously a write-in candidate for the position of Vice President and can attest to how the actions of a small group of committed individuals can make important changes and decisions.

Additional Governance Information
The bulk of the Senate body is composed of Senators who represent academic departments. These senators are not elected in the general election. Academic senator selection processes differ for each department, and can differ in any year. Some senators are asked to participate by the department faculty, some are asked by graduate students within their department, some nominate themselves. Additionally, non-academic groups ("constituent" units) may petition for senate representation. For a  Senator selection form for either an academic or constituent unit please click here.

A requirement of any academic or constituent unit is that they have a 10 or more graduate students members. If your unit (academic or constituent) has less than 10 members you may "combine forces" and petition the Senate for joint representation with another unit to reach the threshold of 10 members. These combined units share one Senator and thus share one vote (click here for a Senate petition form). See sections 220.00-222.02 of GPSA bylaws for further details.

Academic and constituent senators are confirmed early in the Fall semester. The Chief Justice and other positions are appointed by the President and additionally confirmed by the Senate in early Fall.
